NOVEMBER 2018

Market Comments

Rwanda is in its short rain season with rainfall being experienced all over the country. Farmers are doing top dressing and those who planted during the first rain (end of August) are harvesting fresh beans. In some parts of the country, the maize crops have been attacked by the fall armyworm, but the Rwanda Agriculture Board and its partners are helping to control the invasion.
This month, the sale of basal fertilizers (DAP and NPK) has been less compared to last month while top dressing fertilizers increased all over the country. Prices are still the same all over the country as they are fixed by the Government under the subsidy program that covers crops like maize, wheat, beans, soybeans, bananas, Irish potatoes, cassava, fruits and vegetables; and target all categories of farmers.

Market Comments

The crops in Northern and Eastern Provinces are maturing but in Southern Provinces where there are less rains, those crops that had been planted earlier have stunted and dried up. Farmers are now waiting for the rains to replant.
Fertilizer prices are still the same all over the country as they are fixed by the Government under the subsidy program that covers crops like Maize, Wheat, Beans, Soybeans, Bananas, Irish Potatoes, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables and target all categories of farmers.

SEPTEMBER 2018

Market Comments

It’s has been raining in the past three weeks all over the country. Some farmers in Northern and Western Provinces of Rwanda are planting Maize and Potatoes. In Eastern and Southern region there are short rains (for few days) and alternating sunny days thus they are hesitant to start planting.
Farmers have been recommended by the extensionists to prepare their lands as they wait for enough rains.
Prices are still the same across the country as they are fixed by the Government under the subsidy program that covers crops like Maize, Wheat, Beans, Soybeans, Bananas, Irish Potatoes, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables and target all categories of farmers.

MARCH 2018

Market Comments

Season 2018 B is still going on and it’s raining all over the country. In some Districts in East and South Provinces Maize for the last season are still in the farm, few people are planting Beans and rice in marshlands. There are farmers who planted in January and February and now it’s time for top dressing that is why we are observing some increase in sales of urea and decrease in DAP and NPK sales in some Districts.
This season is too short and weather situation is not promising, meteorological reports say that rain will end earlier and farmers are hesitant to plant maize and prefer beans which have a short cycle
The official launch of agricultural season was held in Nyabihu District of Western Province on Friday 9th March 2018 by the Ministry of Agriculture and livestock.
Fertilizer prices are still the same all over the country as are fixed by the Government under the subsidy program that covers crops like Maize, Wheat, Beans, Soybeans, Bananas, Irish Potatoes, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables and target all categories of farmers.
ENAS Company has established a blending plant and has started to blend NPKs and very soon their products will be on the open market because they are not under subsidy program. SOPAV Ltd has also completed the factory for lime crushing and we expect to have lime sold through agro-dealers network very soon.

FEBRUARY 2018

Market Comments

The Agriculture Season 2018 B has started for Maize in East and Southern Provinces and Irish Potatoes in North and Western part of the country. It’s raining all over the country. While in some part farmers are still harvesting and struggling with post-harvest activities, others were planting Maize, Rice, Beans, Irish Potatoes, and vegetables.
We observed increase of sales for basal fertilizers NPK and DAP. Some Districts of West and East farmers bought Urea for their vegetables.
The Government has put in place a subsidy program that covers crops like Maize, Wheat, Beans, Soybeans, Bananas, Irish Potatoes, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables and target all categories of farmers. Based on that policy the prices and the margin at each level for subsidized fertilizers are fixed by the ministry under subsidy program at Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), and are the same country wide. For this season no new tender has been awarded thus previous suppliers of subsidized fertilizers will continue their contracts up to June 2018.

JANUARY 2018

Market Comments

Last month, there were no sales of fertilizers for the main crops, that is, maize, beans and potatoes. Maize had matured and beans and Irish potatoes were being harvested.
The first three weeks crops suffered from draught and stress in the East and South but the last week up to now it’s been raining all over.

DECEMBER 2017

Market Comments

Few quantities of Urea were sold to some farmers for top dressing but for basal fertilizers no sales have been made during November 2017. Maize is the crop targeted for top dressing and it’s planted in all regions of the Rwanda but this period the sales were made in East and Southern Provinces.

As usual, fertilizer prices didn’t change because they are fixed by the ministry under subsidy program at Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB). The subsidy program targets Maize, Wheat, Beans, Soybeans, Bananas, Irish Potatoes, Cassava, Fruits and Vegetables.

The weather was good in all regions and rain was sufficient in October and November but from the last week of November up to now it’s not raining, crops have not yet been affected but there is fear that if it persists the maize crops may suffer and Army Worms have been detected in East and Southern Provinces.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Market Comments

In some areas where the planting season has started sales of DAP and NPK fertilizers have increased. Also, retailers supplying vegetable farmers have begun selling NPK 17:17:17. There has been a decrease in NPK sales in rice growing areas, as the topdressing period has begun thus more urea sales.
There are 14 listed subsidized fertilizer types but only 3 are available in retail shops, that is, DAP, urea and NPK. There has been an addition of 6 types of fertilizers to the list of subsidized fertilizers and 6 agro-dealers were replaced in the towns of Burera, Nyagatare and Rubavu because the existing ones were not active.
