Market Comments

The wholesale price of both NPK and Urea have increased. The most used NPK is NPK 12-24-12. Others that have used by farmers across the country is NPK is 23-10-5 +4 MgO+2zn and NPK 23-20-0 The local importers attributed the increase to the depreciating dollar (as they quote their product in USD). Although prices have increased in wholesalers, the prices in agro-dealer shops noted insignificant change.
The Mozambican Government launched the first stage of Agrarian campaign on October 25th. At the initial stage, the focus crops are cereals (mostly rice and corn) and the product that is moving huge volume of sales in all Mozambique is NPK. In terms of availability of stock to demand, the suppliers have ensured that they have enough stock for the season.
Particulars:
• In north of Mozambique (Nampula Province) the price of NPK and Urea remained the same. The volume of sales is increasing for NPK and Urea.
• In Sofala Province, the price of fertilizer remained the same in all agro-dealers. The volume of sales is expected to increase for NPK than in Urea as it is the start of the season. Farmers have started planting rice and corn. It is expected that both the fertilizer prices and volume of sales will increase once the heavy rains begin. The farmers in Green belt of Beira continue to produce vegetables.
• Tete is the region has the highest consumption of fertilizers. The favorable climate in Angonia district allows for production all year round. In this province, the price of fertilizers has remained the same. The sales volume of the NPK’s and Urea fertilizers is increasing as the fertilizers are being used for potatoes, tobacco and cereals.
• In Chimoio, the prices and sales of fertilizes remained the same. Both NPK and Urea are used for all categories of crops.
• In Sussundenda, the prices and volume of sales of the fertilizers remained the same in most agro-dealer shops.
• In Zambezia Province, the fertilizer prices remained the same while the volume of sales increased for NPK more than Urea.

OCTOBER 2018

Market Comments

In general, the price of both fertilizer (NPK and Urea) is stable. In terms of volumes of sales, there was verified trend of constant prices or less in most of the cases. This scenario is characteristic in this period of the year. Most of vegetables crops in field are about to be harvested and does not need any fertilizer. For cereals, the fields are being prepared-high amount of NPK for ground fertilization especially for rice and corn will be needed. First phase of planting across the country will be start at the end of this month.
Particulars:
• In North of Mozambique (Nampula Province) and in Cimoio, the price of NPK and Urea have remained constant (the small packed quantities). The trend of volumes of sales is falling. Agro-dealer argue that this is a dead period.
• In Sofala, Tete ans Zambezia Provinces, the price of fertilizer remained the same in all agrodealers. The trend of volume of sales has remained constant. The farmer in Green belt of Beira continues to produce vegetables in several stages. There is a high consumption of fertilizers in Tete because fertilizers are used for potatoes, tobacco and cereals cutivations.

SEPTEMBER 2018

Market Comments

In general, the prices of both fertilizers, NPK and Urea have remained stable with a slight variation. During a conversation with officer of Export Marketing (ETG) based in Beira, it was noted that the volume of sales of fertilizer has increased significantly. Same case with Green Belt. The main reason being farmers are still doing vegetables to recover the loss they had during the June-July unexpected heavy rainfall. Another reason is because they have the potatoes in the fields which are in the second stage of application of cover fertilizers. These companies are main companies that supply fertilizer to the agrodealers in Central and Northern region of Mozambique. There are more sales for Urea compared NPK. However, it is expected that NPK sales will increase in the next month due to planting of cereals and legumes.
Particulars:
1. In Northern Mozambique (Nampula Province) the price of NPK and Urea remain the same. But on sales volume, there was verified increase in volume of sales for Urea.
2. In Sofala Province, the price of fertilizers remains the same across all agrodealers. The volume of sales for both fertilizers increased.
3. In Tete province the price of fertilizers remains the same. There is increase in volume of sales for both fertilizers (two times in Urea than NPK) due the vegetables season. Fertilizers are being used also for potatoes, tobacco and cereals. Every day there are trucks of fertilizers from ETG to agrodealers.
4. In Chimoio, the prices and sales of fertilizes did not have a significant variation. NPK and Urea are used for all categories of crops.
5. In Sussundenda, most agrodealers noted increased volume of sales and stable prices.
6. In Zambezia Province, the situation is the same. The prices of fertilizers remain the same, however the sales are increasing due the current vegetable season.

AUGUST 2018

Market Comments

The unexpected heavy rains destroyed many crops in the field. This is especially for vegetable crops and that largely affected horticulture value chain. The farmers affected by this phenomenon are now re-planting. In general, the prices of both NPK and Urea fertilizers have been stable with insignificant variances.
In terms of volumes of sales, the dynamic of sale of ground fertilizes remains the same. There is however expected increase in volume of sales of NPK and Urea in the next few days due to replanting. Fortunately the fertilizer companies have enough stock to satisfy the demand.
Specific occurrences worth mentioning:
 In the north of Mozambique (Nampula Province) the price of NPK and Urea is stable. In terms of volumes of sales, the situation remained the same as in the previous period. Agro dealers argue that prices are high and small holder farmers that get the fertilizers from the company cannot afford the prices. Opening up a unit that produces fertilizer in Nampula Province will thus greatly improve this situation.
 In Sofala Province, the prices of fertilizers have remained the same across all agro dealers. The heavy rains seriously affected this province. Farmers are replanting vegetables and there is an expected increase in volumes of sales of fertilizers in the coming days
 In Tete province the prices of fertilizers prices have been maintained. In general, the trends of volume of sales of both fertilizers (NPK and Urea) is increasing (two times in Urea than NPK) because it is a vegetable season. Fertilizers are also being used for potatoes, tobacco and cereals.
 In Chimoio, the prices and volume of sales of fertilizes did not have significant variances.. Both fertilizers NPK and Urea are used for all categories of crops.
 In Sussundenda, most of agro dealers have the price maintained and the volume of sales has increased.
 In Zambezia Province, the prices of fertilizers have been stable with an increase in volume of sales due to current vegetable season where farmers are using a LAN/CAN together with Urea.

JUNE 2018

Market Comments

In general, the prices of both fertilizers NPK and Urea is stabilized, did not verify variance. One of reason is the exchange rate is not fluctuating significantly, means that the prices in hub suppliers is not varying significantly.
In terms of volumes of sales, the dynamic of sale of ground fertilizes remains the same and the demand of Urea by farmers is increasing due the top dressing for vegetables in the field and fortunately the fertilizers company have enough stock to satisfy the demand.

In north of Mozambique (Nampula Province) the price of NPK and Urea remained the same. In terms of volumes of sales, the situation is the same as the last period. In Sofala Province, the price of fertilizer remained the same for all agrodealer. The volume of sales of Urea is increasing significantly compared to NPK, as farmers are now applying Urea for top dressing in vegetables.

MAY 2018

Market Comments

In May, the prices of both NPK and Urea remained the same. This is because the exchange rate has been constant thus the hub suppliers selling price is not varying significantly. There has been an increase in volumes due to use of fertilizers in vegetables and cereals.
In Sofala Province, the sales of both Urea and NPK increased significantly and most buyers were farmers that are in the green belt of Beira City and surrounding area where most of farmers do vegetables (leaf cabbage, lettuce, beets, cucumbers and herbs). In Tete province fertilizer prices were constant and fertilizers were being used on potatoes, tobacco and cereals.

JANUARY 2018

Market Comments

In north of Mozambique (Nampula Province) farmer do not use fertilizer too much due the unaffordable prices. The few agro-dealers that sell fertilizer purchase from Beira (Green Belt) or Chimoio (Mozambique Fertilizer). Few farmers that buy fertilizer in Nampula use NPK and Urea for vegetables only, which are irrigated, other crops rely on rainfall. There is no huge variation in fertilizers prices.

In Sofala Province, the price of fertilizer remained the same. The prices of the main supplier (Green Belt) where most of agro-dealer purchase fertilizer are constantly changing due to the change in exchange rate. The price in supplier are fixed in USD but the variation is not significant. It’s currently the rainy period, farmers are using fertilizer for rice and maize. Towards the end of January farmers will start to use fertilizers for vegetables (horticulture). There is high demand for NPK during this period in Sofala Province.

There is a huge trend in using of Urea 45%N + S. Farmers argue that it is better compared to Urea 46%. In Tete province fertilizer prices did not change, farmer use fertilizers in all crops such as cereal, legumes and vegetables.

In Manica province, known as “Agricultural Province” the prices of fertilizes did not change. Both fertilizers NPK and Urea are used for all categories of crops.

In Zambezia Province, the situation was similar to Sofala Province. The main crops currently using fertilizer are rice and maize. The price of fertilizer did not change. Agro-dealers purchase fertilizers from Beira and Chimoio thus the high retail prices.
