Fertilizer Prices

Market Comments

OCTOBER 2020

Market Comments

The rush for fertilizer has dropped significantly because the wet agricultural season is coming to an end. However, some farmers have gone to the stores to buy small volumes of fertilizer, especially for vegetable farming. Prices remained virtually unchanged compared to September.

SEPTEMBER 2020

Market Comments

After good sales during the previous two months, the fertilizer market slowed down during the month of September. The level of sales declined because most of the plantations have already received fertilizers. A few late farmers were present in the stores to buy small quantities of Urea. At the level of the stores monitored, deliveries slowed drastically, with prices remaining unchanged. The major manufacturers and importers were busy bidding for SOFITEX’s cotton tenders for the supply of 109,000mt of fertilizer for next season.

AUGUST 2020

Market Comments

The fertilizer market has been active due to the rainy season. Sales have also been increasing because it is the ideal period for fertilization activities, so farmers are rushing to the stores to buy fertilizers. In general, prices have been stable. Some suppliers are experiencing delays in supply, which sometimes leads to stock-outs, because several fertilizer suppliers place supply orders at the same time, so carriers get overloaded.

JULY 2020

Market Comments

Sales in this month of July increased compared to June, due to relatively good rainfall. Even in areas where the rains have been slow, things are getting normal and the agricultural season is doing well. Most farmers have already carried out ploughing and sowing activities and are at the critical stage of NPK fertilizer application, especially on cereals; and even those with limited means are making efforts to use fertilizers at this time. Overall, fertilizer prices remain stable.

JUNE 2020

Market Comments

As announced last month, the general trend in fertilizer demand is high. Sales are proceeding normally with slight disruptions in some areas. In Ziniaré and Yako, for example, the rains are still late in coming, limiting farmers’ use of input stores. Prices are almost constant compared to last month with some differences by store and retailer location. In the shops visited in Bobo Dioulasso for example, Urea costs between 14250 FCFA and 15000 FCFA for a 50kg bag, and NPK varies between 15000 FCFA and 17000FCFA. In Kongoussi, Urea is sold at 13500 FCFA for a 50kg bag against 15500 FCFA in Yako.

MAY 2020

Market Comments

It is the beginning of the agricultural season, so land preparation is in progress. Overall, trade is still slow between retailers and farmers, but wholesalers and importers are actively stocking their fertilizer shops. They hope to receive many visitors to their shops by mid-June. Regarding subsidized fertilizer, supplies have started with the technical support zone. This year, the volume of subsidized fertilizer is 30,000 tons. The selling price of the subsidized fertilizer is 12000FCFA per 50 kg bag and that goes for all types of fertilizers (Urea and NPK).

APRIL 2020

Market Comments

The fertilizer market has been slow, with no major transactions between farmers and agro-dealers, except for small volumes from vegetable crop farmers. This is the dry season, so sales are slow, especially in the southern zone where there is a lot of vegetable farming. Farmers are concerned about preparations toward the rainy season farming, so importers and wholesalers are busy supplying fertilizer warehouses in preparation for the coming season. Retailers have started making their fertilizer needs known to importers and wholesalers. The ports of Abidjan, Tema and Lomé, which serve Burkina Faso, are not operating full time due to some safety measures being taken. This could result in supply delays for Burkina Faso. Major sales are expected to begin in May with the start of the rainy season.

MARCH 2020

Market Comments

The fertilizer market remained slow in terms of sales volumes. The health threat created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the end of the coming dry season have really slowed down the fertilizer market. Among the agro-dealers interviewed, the few 50-kg bags of fertilizer available sell between 17500 FCFA and 18000 FCFA for NPK 14 23 14; 15000 FCFA and 17000 FCFA for NPK 23 10 05; and 15000 FCFA and 16500 FCFA for Urea.

FEBRUARY 2020

Market Comments

The fertilizer market has relatively improved due to the dry season campaign that started in January for cereal and vegetable production. In the fertilizer stores monitored, an increase in fertilizer sales was noted. The 50 kg bag of fertilizer sells between 17,500FCFA and 18,000FCFA for NPK 14 23 14; 16,000FCFA to 17,500FCFA for NPK 15 15; and for Urea between 15,000FCFA to 16,500FCFA.

JANUARY 2020

Market Comments

Demand for fertilizers increased slightly due to the introduction of crops from the dry season that has started for cereal and vegetable production. Farmers who have cash from the sale of the first harvests products were the ones buying fertilizers. In the shops monitored, agro-dealers carried out stock renewals to meet demand. Overall prices remained stable in all production areas.

The national security situation has led to the displacement of several farmers to less hostile areas where some partners are assisting them by providing agricultural inputs for the dry season.

DECEMBER 2019

Market Comments

The fertilizer market remained low as last month. Transaction volumes dropped considerably for all fertilizer types. In the shops monitored, there were very little movement of stocks, and prices per 50 kg bag, remained unchanged.

NOVEMBER 2019

Market Comments

The fertilizer market remained slow in the main production areas, as most farmers have started harvesting. Trade is rare except for a few quantities of fertilizer absorbed by vegetable production that has started. In the northern regions, Central Plateau and Boucle du Mouhoun, the security situation has had a negative impact on sales due to the displaced populations, who have abandoned their fields. Overall there was little stock rotation and the prices of the 50 kg bag remained unchanged.

OCTOBER 2019

Market Comments

The fertilizer market was slow, due to the rainy season that has entered its final phase. At this time, fertilizer requirements are low because most of the plants have reached maturity, indicating the beginning of the first harvests. At the level of shops monitored, fertilizer sales fell drastically, with prices remaining unchanged. The prices recorded for the 50kg bag ranged from 17000 to 17500 FCFA for NPK 14 23 14; from 15000 FCFA to 16000 FCFA for NPK 23 10 05; and from 14000 to 16000 FCFA for urea.

In the meantime, the demand for fertilizers is expected to be low in the coming weeks, until the dry season for cereals and especially for vegetables.

SEPTEMBER 2019

Market Comments
The fertilizer market has been marked by two periods. It was first of all a period of good rainfall which encouraged a strong demand for fertilizers and helped to accelerate the development of the plants. Sales have increased, and have even reached their peak in some of the shops monitored. Overall, at the level of the agro-dealers surveyed, formulas such as NPK 14-23-14, NPK 23-10-05, NPK 14-18-18-18, NPK 15-15-15 were available and were very well sold. After the large sales, demand began to decline in intensity. The rains began to become scarce and producers began to worry. Insecurity has also had a negative impact on the sale of fertilizers in some areas of the northern part of the country, due to the population displacement.
Prices are marked by some variations depending on the shops and localities monitored. It has been observed that the 50 kg bag of NPK 23-10-05 sells for CFAF 14500 in Kupela, compared to CFAF 17500 in Kaya. As for NPK 14-23-14, it costs 16500 FCFA to buy the 50 kg bag in Nouna, against 19000 FCFA in Ziniaré.
Concerning the subsidized fertilizer, producers are provided with a 50 kg bag for NPK and urea at CFAF 12,000. It should be recalled that since 2008, the State has set up a subsidy programme to support cereal producers. Subsidized fertilizer quantities represent on average 10% of the market each year. This year, the quantities of subsidised fertilisers amounted to 30,000 tonnes, and are still marginal in relation to the needs expressed by producers.

AUGUST 2019

Market Comments
The raining season is well established and the demand of fertilizers have kicked up. Transactions have also increased as fertilizer sale trends are on the rise, as seen in most retailers’ stores. There is adequate quantity of fertilizer supplied to the market as agro-dealers have made large orders for fertilizers to renew their stocks. majority of the fertilizer shops, their prices remained unchanged, however it is necessary to pay 24000 FCFA to obtain a bag of 50kg of NPK 14-23-14+6S+1B (Origin Belgium) which is good promotion in Ouagadougou and Kenya.

JULY 2019

Market Comments
Transactions have improved in the fertilizer market. Good rainfall and crop establishment has driven up the demand for fertilizer. Trade is increasing between farmers and agro-dealers in the South and West, while they are still low in the north. Overall, fertilizer supply is good, with relatively stable prices that vary from one shop to another depending on the formulation and sources of supply.
With regard to subsidized fertilizer, fertilizer dispatching continued by zone of technical support. But this operation does not affect the retailers because the volume of subsidized fertilizer of 35000 tons in total, is far from filling the 10% of the national need of fertilizer.

JUNE 2019

Market Comments
The wet agricultural season is characterized by some rains in the western part of the country where plowing and sowing are in progress. At the beginning of the agricultural season, the overall level of trade is still low between retailers and farmers. On the other hand, the agro dealers remained active in the supply of their respective stores. With regard to subsidized fertilizer, fertilizer dispatching started by technical support zone. But this operation does not affect the retailers because the volume of subsidized fertilizer of 35000 tons in total, is far from filling the 10% of the national need of fertilizer. The overall price trend is on the rise, with variations by store, origin and location of retailers. In the fertilizer shops followed in Kaya, the NPK 14 23 14 is sold between 19500 FCFA to 24000 FCFA (origin Belgium) for the bag of 50 / kg. In koupela, urea sells for 12,000 FCFA against 16,000 FCFA the 50kg bag in Dédougou. The NPK 15 15 15 formula varies between 14500 FCFA to 15000 FCFA the 50kg bag in the shops of Nouna.

MAY 2019

Market Comments
Like previous month, the fertilizer market has remained slow in terms of volumes traded, with no major transactions between retailers and farmers. Farmers continue to maintain plantations and have very little presence in fertilizer shops. Importers, and wholesalers, are busy sourcing fertilizer to stock up in preparation for the upcoming season. Some retailers have begun to express their fertilizer demands to importers and wholesalers. Others, on the other hand, are still waiting, for the time to capitalize on the dynamism of the market and to analyze the fertilizer price levels before the start of the agricultural season

APRIL 2019

Market Comments
The fertilizer market has been slow in terms of volumes traded. The market garden season that agitated the market a little in previous weeks, is drawing near its end, as the raining season preparation has started. The farmers are currently preparing the fields for the rainy season. As a result, they are not purchasing fertilizers. On the other side, agro-dealers have started negotiating with importers as prices of fertilizers are beginning to increase. Moreover, thanks to the 13,627,000,000 FCFA financial support provided by the Government, the prices of cotton fertilizers (NPK and urea) have experienced a reduction of 7% during the 2019-2020 crop year. Indeed, prices went from 15000 FCFA/50kg (price on credit) in 2018 to 14000 FCFA/50kgin 2019.

MARCH 2019

Market Comments
The fertilizer market was marked by two trends. At some agrodealers, a steady pace due to the continued availability of water in reservoirs for market gardening and sluggish for others because of water depletion. Prices varied according to supply costs. The price ranges observed in stores per 50 kg bag during the month are as follows:
• 17 000 to 18000 FCFA for the NPK 14-23-14 ;
• 15 000 to 16 500 FCFA For urea;
• 15 000 to 18 000 FCFA for the NPK 15-15-15 ;

FEBRUARY 2019

Market Comments
The fertilizer market remained stable in terms of sales volumes at most agro dealers shop surveyed. However, water reservoirs (dams) that waters vegetable production are experiencing a significant drop in water levels this month, and consequently the demand of fertilizers from market gardeners has slowed down in some localities. This is to say that the drop in water availability will have a negative impact on fertilizer demand in the coming months.
Overall, retail prices have increased in some places, this increase was explained by the actors to have affected the entire supply chain. The price ranges observed during the month are:
• 16,000 to 19500 FCFA for the NPK 14-23-14;
• 16,500 to 17,500 CFAF for the NPK 23-10-05;
• 15,000 to 16,500 CFAF urea 46%;
• 16,500 to 19,000 FCFA for NPK 15-15-15;
• 17,500 to 18,000 FCFA for the NPK 14-18-18

JANUARY 2019

Market Comments
The dry season has started, and farmers are mainly growing grains and vegetables. The agro-dealers are still selling at the same price as in the previous month. However, there are expected increases in prices as the year progresses, which was attributed to the increase in the world market fertilizer prices.

DECEMBER 2018

• FCFA 16,500 to 17,000 for NPK 23 10 05;
• FCFA 13,000 to 16,000 for urea 46%;
• FCFA 15,500 to 17,500 for NPK 15 15 15;

OCTOBER 2018

Market Comments
Fertilizer market transactions have decreased intensively. According to agrodealers surveyed, retail sales volumes have fallen. The reason is that, the agricultural campaign is very advanced and most plants had already received good dosage of fertilizer. As a result, demand for fertilizer has decreased. Fertilizer inventories were almost unchanged during this month. Retail sales prices remained virtually unchanged.

MAY 2018

Market Comments
Fertilizer sale remained low, with no large transactions between retailers and agricultural producers, while for importers and wholesalers, it was active. Some retailers have begun to express their needs to importers and wholesalers. Importers prepared and / or continued deliveries of quantities of fertilizer allocated in the tenders of the Ministry of Agriculture and the cotton companies. It should be noted that the transfer prices of cotton fertilizers for 2018/2019 campaign are set at 15,000 FCFA (credit price) for the 50 kg bag of urea and NPK complex fertilizer.

APRIL 2018

Market Comments

In terms of transaction volumes, the market remained almost stable. Water available for market gardening and dry season cereal production in reservoirs has been decreasing over the course of the days and therefore has limited fertilizer market transactions. Prices and stocks did not change much from the agro dealers surveyed. The price of 50 kg bag of NPK 15 15 15 goes from 15500 (Ouagadougou) to 17 000 FCFA (in Kaya). Urea price is from FCFA 12,000 / bag of 50 kg (Koupéla) to FCFA 15,000 (Kongoussi). The NPK 14 23 14 formula maintains its minimum price of 17,000 (Dédougou) and its maximum at 18,500 FCFA (Koupéla).

FEBRUARY 2018

Market Comments

The fertilizer market recorded a few more volumes transactions compared to last month. These volumes were driven by the effective implementation of market gardening activities in the dry season. Thus, many agro dealers interviewed were able to renew their stock. And following sources of supply and logistical costs, prices went up or down for one formula or formula to another. The bag of 50kg of NPK 15 15 15 was sold between FCFA 15500 (Ouagadougou) and FCFA 17 000 (in Kaya) the 50 kg bag. Urea ranged from FCFA 12,000 (Koupela) to FCFA 15,000 (Kongoussi). The NPK 14 23 14 formula maintained a minimum price of FCFA 17,000 (Dédougou) and a maximum of FCFA 18,500 (Koupéla).
Broadly, agro dealers are worried about the market for the next two months because rainfall as a whole was not abundant during the wet season. As a result, the problem of availability of water in dams and vegetable sites is beginning to arise. The dry season can be very short and therefore the fertilizer market which could stagnate earlier than expected by the resellers.

JANUARY 2018

Market Comments

The fertilizer market, like the previous month, remained sluggish, with less and less transaction volumes. The few quantities traded are mainly taken by vegetable producers during the growing season. Almost all the agro dealers interviewed have not yet renewed their stock since the end of the rains. The old stock of fertilizers includes compound fertilizers (such as NPK 15 15 15 sold at 16 000 FCFA / 50kg in Orodara, NPK 14 23 14 to 17 000 FCFA / 50Kg in Dédougou) and Urea sold at 14 000 FCFA / 50kg bag in Ziniaré. Overall, prices remained unchanged during the period.

NOVEMBER 2017

Market Comments

The fertilizer market experienced a decline in transactions between agro dealers and farmers. Most farms have applied the last doses of fertilizer (Urea) for the season since September.

Fertilizer demands were mainly for NPK 15 15 15, NPK 14 23 14 and Urea, used for grain plants throughout the country. This was the case for the Boucle du Mouhoun and Cascades regions, which experienced less rains, so stunted grain plants benefited from fertilizer infusion. Comparing sales by product, NPK formulas (15 15 15, 14 23 14) and Urea 46% were the most sold this month.

Demand has fallen, but prices have remained the same as in the previous month because the old stocks remain in the shops. The minimum price of urea is 12,000 FCFA / 50kg bag in Yako, Ouahigouya and Koupela. The maximum price for the same formula is 17,000 FCFA / 50kg in Bobo-Dioulasso. For the NPK 15 15 15, the 50kg bag prices varies from 16,000 FCFA to 18,000 FCFA. For NPK 14 23 14, prices range from 16,500 FCFA (Houndé, Dédougou) to 19,000 FCFA (Bobo-Dioulasso).

OCTOBER 2017

Market Comments

In Burkina Faso, the fertilizer market remained dynamic in terms of transactions for agro-dealers. The general trend of sales has been on the rise for most formulas such as NPK 15 15 15, NPK 14 23 14, and Urea.

Subsidized fertilizers such as NPK 15 15 15, NPK 14 23 14 and Urea were sold at a fixed price of 12 000 FCFA per 50 kg bag, unlike commercial fertilizers whose prices varied according to the cost of supplying certain formulas. In Koupèla, the low procurement costs resulted in a decrease of 2,500 FCFA in Urea minimum price (14,500 FCFA compared to 12,000 FCFA in October). The price of NPK 14 23 14 decreased by 1000 FCFA in Kaya (from 18000 FCFA to 17 000 FCFA).

With sales expected to decrease at the end of the rainy season in the coming weeks, retailers are hoping for good market crop to boost their revenues.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Market Comments

Thanks to the improved rainfall, the fertilizer market remained dynamic in terms of transactions during August. On the value chain, movements have been as much between wholesalers and retailers as between retailers and farmers.

Overall, prices remained stable in the majority. Compared to last year, the minimum prices for certain imported formulas, namely NPK (15 15 15, 14 23 14, 20 10 10) and urea 46%, are particularly low this year in certain markets (12 500 and 12 000 FCFA / 50 kg respectively) such as Leo and Koupèla. While these prices are the delight of agricultural producers, they nevertheless play a mistrust on the quality of fertilizers sold at such relatively low prices.
