Market Comments

The fertilizer market remained calm in the groundnut basin, in Casamance, in the Senegal River valley and in the Anambée basin. Transactions were more dynamic in the Niayes area, where market gardening activity is almost in all seasons. Prices remained relatively stable in all areas.

It should be noted that new types of organic fertilizer have started to be introduced in stores in the central zone. For example, Top Fertile (7,000 FCFA 50 kg bag), Tero (10,000 FCFA bag 50 kg). The demand for organic fertilizer is not yet important because the producers have not yet adopted these types of fertilizer despite strong awareness of organic companies.

With the approach of the rainy season, the fertilizer market is expected to see a rise in demand, prices should probably move. The major fertilizer operators are anxiously awaiting the validation by the State of the lists of approved operators for the distribution of the fertilizer and the quotas that will be allocated to them. Exiting these lists could really boost fertilizer market transactions and significantly increase orders from the fertilizer industries in the coming months.

Goundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel), the fertilizer market has lacked dynamism because the majority of crops grown in this area are under rain. Demand remained weak and localized while supply was average. Inventory at the reseller level is not important at this time. Most of them have already launched their campaign orders with their suppliers. Purchases should restart with the arrival of wintering.

Casamance (Ziguinchor region, Sedhiou and Kolda), the market remained shy. The few transactions noted come from market gardeners. The offer has decreased significantly because resellers do not take the risk of making large orders. Prices remained stable during this month.

Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Niayes Strip) – market gardening area, orders remain dynamic; they relate mainly to NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 for gardening.

Valley of the SENEGAL (Saint – Louis) River – rice growing area, the demand for DAP has declined with the maturation of crops. It could revive with rainfed crops. Regarding gardening, demand for urea and NPK 10 10 20 is still good.

Market Comments

In the off-season production areas (river valley and Anambé Basin), fertilizer market exchanges have declined significantly with the end of fertilizer application. However, in market gardening areas, transactions have maintained their dynamism. Prices remained stable overall with occasional slight variations (down and / or up) depending on operators and zones.
Goundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel), the fertilizer market remained calm, characterized by a rather weak supply and demand. In some shops, prices fluctuated by +/- FCFA 500 on 50 kg bag of certain formulas, particularly urea, NPK 6 20 10 and NPK 15 15 15. Inventories at retailers’ shops are not much and most retailers have placed order to stock up.

Casamance (Ziguinchor region, Sedhiou and Kolda), the demand was less. The few sales recorded, are drawn mainly by market gardening activities. The supply of fertilizer in stores has decreased significantly because retailers do not take the risk of placing large orders. Prices remained stable during this month in this area. In this rainfed rice production area, demand for rice fertilizer is expected to increase in the coming weeks, with rains coming soon.
Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Niayes Strip) – market gardening area, orders remained active; they mainly concerned NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 for gardening. Prices remained relatively stable.
Valley of the SENEGAL (Saint – Louis) River – A rice growing zone, where the hot off – season is very advanced. The demand in DAP (river valley) and the NPK 15 15 15 (Anambé basin) has decreased considerably because the spreading period has been exceeded. However, in the river valley, demand for market gardeners has remained active. The supply is running out but retailers have launched orders that would raise the level of supply by next month.

APRIL 2018

Market Comments

The fertilizer market is marked by two trends according to the areas of production. In the rice-growing areas, trade maintained its good momentum especially during this hot off-season season. This campaign has mobilized many rice producers, causing an increase in planting areas. In the groundnut basin, in Casamance and the Niayes band, trade remained calm.
The Groundnut Basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel), Fertilizer demand has dropped considerably because it is a rainfed area. Due to the weak demand, retailers make orders to stock up. Stocks are becoming less important, sometimes non-existent in some shops in Kaffrine. Others in Kaolack, on the other hand, still have small amounts of urea which are sold at unchanged prices.

In Casamance (Ziguinchor, Sedhiou and Kolda region), applications are rare except in Kolda specifically in the Anambé basin where the NPK 15 15 15 is very popular (off-season growing area). Given the sluggishness of the market, the supply has decreased significantly as resellers do not take the risk of making large orders.

Thiès and Dakar (Bande des Niayes) Regions -market gardening area, fertilizer demand remained dynamic; it mainly concern the complex fertilizers NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 for market gardening. Sales of NPK 6 20 10 and urea were less dynamic with slight declines in some stores.

Valley of the SENEGAL (Saint – Louis) River – rice growing area, the time has come for spreading, and the demand for DAP (rice fertilizer) has increased. According to operators, there has been occasional drops in fertilizer prices. Demand for urea and NPK 10 10 20 remained good. Fertilizer sales have been almost inactive in most stores.

MARCH 2018

Market Comments

The fertilizer market remained calm in the central zone and part of the southern zone. Meanwhile, in Valley of the river Senegal and in the Anambé basin, the demand of fertilizer has resumed in areas where rice is grown. Prices have changed a little, with some slight declines and occasional increases in the groundnut basin and in the valley.
The Groundnut Basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel), the fertilizer market has run out of pace because the majority of crops grown in those areas are under rain. Demand remained weak and localized while supply is average.

In Casamance (Ziguinchor, Sedhiou and Kolda region), specifically in the Kolda zone (Anambé Basin), off-season sowing started. That has led to an increase in the demand for complex fertilizer NPK 15 15 15.

Thiès and Dakar (Bande des Niayes) Regions – market gardening area, orders remained dynamic, especially for NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 compound fertilizers for market gardening.
in Valley of the river Senegal (Saint – Louis) – rice growing area, with the onset of the rice off – season sowing, the demand for DAP (rice fertilizer) has increased. Regarding gardening, the demand for urea and NPK 10 10 20 is still good.

FEBRUARY 2018

Market Comments

As in the previous month, the fertilizer market was heavily dependent on the level of market gardening control and availability at the store level. It is characterized by a clear decrease in the level of trade in the Groundnut Basin and the rice-growing areas, unlike in market gardening areas more or less important transactions are still noted. Sales prices remained relatively stable in all registered stores.

The fertilizer market has been relatively quiet in the Groundnut Basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel). Demand remains weak while supply is average. The few applications that have been registered come mainly from market gardeners. Resellers no longer keep large stocks in the stores. They mostly proceed by order.

Thiès and Dakar (Bande des Niayes) regions – Vegetable growing area, orders were dynamic mainly concerning NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 compound fertilizers for market gardening.

Valley of the river SENEGAL (Saint – Louis) – rice zone, with the end of the harvest, there was a slight decline in demand for DAP fertilizer (rice fertilizer). On the other hand, fertilizers used for market gardeners have been well sold. In this zone, where several fruit and vegetable export companies are located, large volume outflows in urea and NPK 10 10 20 have been recorded.

JANUARY 2018

Market Comments

Two major trends have marked the market of fertilizers this month: the market gardening areas have maintained the good momentum of the past month; on the other hand, the zones of cereal crops and legumes are carried away by a rather calm rhythm since the end of wintering. Prices remained stable in almost all production areas.

Groundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel)

The market has slowed down. As in the past month, weak demand has pushed resellers to significantly reduce their orders at the level of large production companies. However, some quantities sold at the same price as the previous month were recorded among market gardeners and some NGOs that run projects to support market gardeners.

Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Band of the Niayes) – Vegetable growing area

The compound fertilizers (NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20) used for market gardening continued to be sold well at identical prices in the past month.

Valley of the river SENEGAL (Saint – Louis and Matam) – Rice growing area

Despite the good availability of fertilizers, orders in DAP (rice fertilizer) have fallen sharply, due to the fact that producers are harvesting rice. Nevertheless, in this zone where the market gardening activity is also well developed, we have recorded quite significant sales of Urea and NPK 10 10 20 with the big market gardening companies.

DECEMBER 2017

Market Comments

Agriculture is mainly rain fed, hence with the end of the rainy season and most crops already matured, farmers demand for fertilizer has declined sharply. The quantities sold by the stores have therefore fallen significantly. This is true for all farming areas, except the Niayes area and the valley as market gardening is practically all year in these areas. In most areas, prices remained stable with relative declines by location.

Groundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel)

The market is characterized by an increasingly weak demand. Given the low level of demand, supply has also fallen as retailers did not find it prudent to top restocks their stores and warehouse. However, sales of small quantities were observed with market gardeners.

Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Band of the Niayes) – Vegetable growing area

NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 orders for market gardening are still high. Prices remained mainly stable compared to the past month.

Valley of the river SENEGAL (Saint – Louis)

In the main rice-growing areas, the situation has not changed significantly. It is characterized by declining demand as farmers are still harvesting. Orders of DAP (rice fertilizer) and 10 10 20 fell sharply. Large scale gardeners also made some orders during this month.

NOVEMBER 2017

Market Comments

The fertilizer market remained calm as seasonal crops are matured, there was a sharp drop in demand and supply in most production areas. However, sales remained vibrant in market gardening areas (Niayes and the river valley). Prices remained relatively stable.

Groundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel)- Valley of the river SENEGAL (Saint – Louis)

In the main groundnut and cereal production areas, sales were slow as orders for DAP (rice fertilizer) and 10 10 20 became increasingly rare. Offers decreased significantly because retailers did not take the risk of making large orders. On the other hand, the market gardening activity in these areas continues to absorb just a small part of the urea’s supply. Prices have remained stable, but there are marginal decreases in some shops.

Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Band of the Niayes) – Vegetable growing area

NPK 15 10 10 and 10 10 20 formulas all used for market gardening continued to keep the the market active. Prices remained stable mostly compared to last month.

As indicated last month, demand and supply of fertilizer is expected to continue to decline in the groundnut basin, river valley and Casamance. Unlike in the Niayes area, the market is expected to remain stable.

OCTOBER 2017

Market Comments

In Senegal, sales of fertilizer have declined for groundnuts, cotton and cereals, except those for food crops which have sold well.

Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Band of the Niayes) – Vegetable growing area

In vegetable gardening areas (Dakar, Thiès), sales of NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 have increased, coinciding with the planting season. The fertilizer market is well stocked, and prices remained largely stable compared to last month.

Groundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel)

In the Groundnut Basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine), the market was characterized by a significant decrease in demand, almost all farmers had ordered their fertilizers in august. The few remaining orders for urea revolve around food crops. Prices remained stable in this area with slight decreases in each location. Demand is expected to continue falling as the rainy season comes to an end.

Valley of the river SENEGAL (Saint – Louis and Matam)

In the rice-growing area (the Vallée of the rivers, in the Saint-Louis region), the harvest period is approaching, hence orders for DAP (rice fertilizer) and NPK 10 10 20 are decreasing. Supply was good and prices remained stable.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Market Comments

In Senegal, rainfall has remained steady in all areas of production. Some cereals such as corn and millet are even maturing.

The fertilizer market was marked by a slight decrease in demand in the groundnut basin. This is reflected in a relative decrease in the level of sales in many stores in the Kaolack and Kaffrine regions (groundnut and cereal areas). This slight decline in demand is due to the fact that most farmers had already purchased their fertilizer during the month of July and the first fortnight of August.

The market should maintain its dynamism in the Niayes and Casamance areas where the state of the agricultural activities would still require the use of fertilizers.

Overall, the market is expected to decline in the coming months.

Regions of Thiès and Dakar (Band of the Niayes) – Vegetable growing area

In the Niayes area (market gardening area), NPK 15 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 for market gardening continue to be sold well. Prices remained stable mainly compared to last month.

Groundnut basin (Kaolack, Kaffrine, Diourbel)

The market remained buoyant, even though the intensity has declined over the last few weeks. NPK 6 20 10, NPK 15 15 15, urea, NPK 10 10 and NPK 10 10 20 were the most sold in this area. A slight decrease in prices was observed due to the slight decrease in demand.

In Casamance, South zone of Senegal (region of Ziguinchor, Sédhiou and Kolda)

In Casamance, demand remained strong; the transactions were dynamic. Prices remained stable compared to last month. The best-selling fertilizers were NPK 15 15 15 used for fertilizing rice in the south, NPK 10 10 20 and NPK 6 20 10.

Valley of the river SENEGAL (Saint – Louis and Matam)

In the northern part of Senegal (river valley, Saint – Louis area), which is a rice and vegetable growing area where the off-season crops are grown, the market is still lively. Sales of DAP and NPK 10-10-20 were up. Prices remained largely stable.
